Preventive dentistry
It specializes in early dental interventions to stop dental and periodontal diseases in order to prevent necrosis. It also includes other preventive measures such as the use of fluoride and sealants.
Preventive dentistry aims to prevent dental problems before they start, treat existing dental problems before they worsens, and detect dental and oral diseases to treat them later. Preventive dentistry steps are often applied at the beginning of the regular visits to the dentist and are summarized in:
1. X-rays:
● The small image inside the mouth: The image of the teeth and surrounding bone tissue is very clear, it is used inside the mouth to detect tooth decay and the length of the roots and its surrounding bone.
● Panorama image: It helps the dentist not only to see the teeth and the surrounding bone, but also the temporal joint, the sinuses and any apparent problems related to the teeth, thus it protects from the repeated exposure to radiation using small images.
● 3D CT scan: It helps in the diagnosis and the development of accurate treatment plans as it determines the anatomical description of the teeth, the periodontal tissues and the jawbones accurately.
2. Comprehensive oral and dental examination:
It is one of the most important steps in preventive dentistry because it helps to identify dental problems in their early stages. The patient needs regular dental examination every 6 months (twice a year), but in some cases the patient may need more than twice, depending on the health state of the mouth and teeth.
If dental problems are not treated early, they worsen quickly, thus examining the problems in their early stages reduces the possibility of complicating these problems making their treatment easier and lower in cost, compared to discovering it at a late stage. After cleaning the teeth and taking appropriate x-rays, the doctor examines each tooth separately and in the event of any problems in the teeth or gums, they are recorded and he recommends treatment in the subsequent sessions.
3. Teeth cleaning and polishing:
Regular dental cleaning (scaling) in the clinic is one of the most important steps in maintaining dental and oral health to get rid of plaque, which is the main cause of dental decay and gum infections. Dental cleaning provides a deeper cleaning of the teeth, especially in hard-to-reach areas, it is recommended to have regular dental cleaning in the clinic every 4 to 6 months.
4. Deep gingival Scaling:
It is a deep cleaning of the teeth and gums, as plaque is deeply removed, as plaque and calcifications increase the possibility of tooth decay and gum infections. Deep cleaning of the teeth is done using "ultrasonic scaler" or "manual scalers" as needed, which is followed by root planning and polishing to smooth the surfaces of the teeth with their roots, thus reducing plaque deposition and calcifications later.
